The Tab’s Mental Health Survey

An alarming report recently published by The Tab has spotlighted the struggle with mental health faced by students across universities in the UK. The comprehensive study, conducted in collaboration with the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), surveyed 4,000 students from various universities, painting a troubling picture of the state of student mental health.

The Tab’s survey reveals that a majority of students suffer from mental health difficulties, with 69% admitting they have experienced a mental health illness, and 61% struggling with anxiety. For 80% of these students, their mental health issues began before attending university. The mental health problems students face are impacting their academic performance, with 85% reporting missing a lecture or seminar due to their mental health issues.

Despite universities' efforts to promote their commitment to mental health, only 12% of the students surveyed believed their institution handled mental health issues effectively. Furthermore, less than half of the students who struggled with mental health problems reported their issues to their university. Of those who did, 65% were dissatisfied with the help they received.

The Tab's report underscores the urgent need for universities to reassess their approach to supporting student mental health. It is a call to action for institutions to create safe and supportive environments for their students, prioritizing mental health and ensuring adequate resources are in place.
